The UN International Day of Non-Violence was commemorated on 2 October 2017 at the the Palais des Nations, the United Nations Office at Geneva (UNOG), sponsored by the Permanent Mission of India in Geneva, with support from the Cultural Diplomacy and Outreach Section of UNOG. Ambassador Pascal Alan Nazareth, author of the widely acclaimed book Gandhi’s Outstanding Leadership, delivered the keynote address: “Gandhi for the 21st Century.”. Mr. Michael Møller, the Director-General of UNOG, offered the welcoming remarks and launched the French edition of the book. He then received the ten European language editions of the book as a gift to the UN Library. H.E. Ambassador Rajiv Kumar Chander, Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations Office and other international organizations in Geneva, spoke about the importance of the Day of Non-Violence, which is observed on Gandhi’s birthday. Professor Isabelle Milbert of the Geneva Graduate Institute commented on Ambassador Nazareth’s remarks, and Mr. Francisco Pissano, Director of the UN Library, moderated the lively question and answer session at the end of the programme.
In addition to elaborating on Gandhi’s leadership inspiration, Ambassador Nazareth also touched upon spiritual subjects including the importance of meditation, vegetarianism and spiritual Masters such as Sri Chinmoy, whom he cited as a true Guru. Sri Chinmoy had worked at the Indian Consulate under Ambassador Nazareth, before offering Peace Meditations for delegates and staff at UN Headquarters in New York. During the reception and book signing that followed the programme, the musical group “Mountain-Silence” performed songs composed by Sri Chinmoy dedicated to peace.
